Natural Sun Care For Your Baby

Natural Sun Care For Your Baby

Erin Burt

The days are getting longer and the sun is getting stronger, which means that it’s time to start thinking about the best sun care for your little one.

Young skin is vulnerable to damaging rays and just one blistering sunburn during childhood can double the risk of future melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer.  Needless to say, proper sun protection is important.

From hats to rash guards to sunscreens…get equipped for the hot summer months!

Sunscreen
Six months is the age that babies can start to wear sunscreen safely, and it is important to know exactly what is going onto their skin, since the skin is an organ and will absorb whatever is on it into the body. Some of the sprays can be inhaled and lotions applied to the face can be ingested as well as absorbed into the body where applied anywhere else, so you want the safest ingredients that provides the best UV protection.

Badger is a natural, organic skin care company that boasts some of the safest products out there. They have the lowest possible hazard rating by the Environmental Working Group and is SPF 30. Thinkbaby, with an SPF of 50+, is also top rated by the EWG and leaves out all of the questionable ingredients keeping your baby safe.  Keeki Pure & Simple sunscreen is another option with safe ingredients, but also has a scent of banana cream pie!

Hats
Even though sunscreens are a must, they don’t protect against all types of sun damage and many babies don’t have a lot hair to protect their heads. Swim Baby hats are cute and stylish with a large brim to keep the rays off their face and head, tie under the chin to keep it secure and reversible prints to match most outfits. Look for a high UV rating when you buy, just like with sunscreen.

Rash Guard
A safer alternative to the traditional bathing suit, a rash guard provides more body cover for more UV protection, while also being light and comfortable. Sun Baby has solid color tops to coordinate with any swim diaper. These tops help eliminate the worry of sunburn and sun damage that come with all of the exposed areas a bathing suit has and can be missed when applying sunscreen. Rash guards also make changing a diaper super easy!

Eye Care
Wearing sunglasses can help protect your baby’s sensitive eyes. The only problem is getting your baby to wear them, but if they are cooperative Babiators are the way to go. They have a lot of different colors, are super stylish, and they will send you a replacement if they are lost or broken within the first year of purchase making them essentially risk free!

Lisa is mother to a 15-month-old who would live outside in the sunshine if she could, so she knows the importance of sun care.
